Every costume department in history has had to work out how to put a hussar on screen. A handful of them have done it brilliantly.
Quick answer. The best hussar costumes on screen are in Sergei Bondarchuk's 1967 War and Peace, the ITV Sharpe series (1993 to 1997), Napoleon (both the 1970 Bondarchuk and the 2023 Scott films), Vanity Fair (2004) and Richard Attenborough's Young Winston (1972). All five rebuilt uniforms from period patterns rather than approximating them. The common feature: they treated the jacket as structural tailoring, not costume.
War and Peace (1967)
Sergei Bondarchuk's four part Soviet adaptation remains the benchmark for Napoleonic era costume. The production employed Soviet state tailoring workshops with access to museum originals. The hussar jackets of the Pavlograd Hussars (Nikolai Rostov's regiment) were built in sky blue with white braid, exactly as the regimental pattern of 1807. The pelisses were real sheepskin trimmed. Every button and braid was hand set.
The combat scenes used thousands of extras in correct uniform, which was financially impossible for Western productions of the same period. The result is a visual record that has not been surpassed in more than fifty years.
Sharpe (ITV, 1993 to 1997)
Bernard Cornwell's novels gave the production a huge canvas of Peninsular War regiments. The ITV adaptation, filmed on budget in Crimea and Yalta, had an outstanding costume department under Catherine Cook. French hussars at Talavera, British 60th rifles, Spanish regulars and Portuguese cacadores were all built from period patterns. The famous Rifle green jackets worn by Sean Bean's character became iconic.
Hussar appearances include French prisoners in the Chosen Men episode and the sabre scene in Sharpe's Honour. The hussar dolmans used were real wool with hand set braid, which is why they still look right thirty years later even in high definition reruns.
Napoleon (2023)
Ridley Scott's 2023 film divided historians on strategy and politics but was praised almost universally on costume. Dave Crossman and Janty Yates built uniforms for a core cast and dressed thousands of extras with a mixture of bespoke and rental stock. The French hussars at Austerlitz are the standout: short dolmans in correct regimental colour, fur colback caps, boots to the knee. The sabretache work in close ups shows real embroidery, not printed facings.
Where the film takes liberties is on silhouette: dolmans sit slightly longer than historical examples, probably to flatter modern body shapes. For a specialist viewer this is noticeable. For general audiences it reads as entirely period.
Vanity Fair (2004) and Becky Sharp's officers
Mira Nair's 2004 Vanity Fair, costume by Beatrix Aruna Pasztor, built accurate British hussars for the Brussels sequences before Waterloo. George Osborne's 7th Hussars dolman in blue with yellow braid is particularly fine. The ball scene at the Duchess of Richmond's party remains one of the best visual records of early 19th century British hussar dress uniform in any film production.
Young Winston (1972)
Richard Attenborough's biography of the young Winston Churchill shows him as a subaltern in the 4th Queen's Own Hussars during the 1890s. The costume work recreated the regimental dress exactly: dark blue dolman with gold braid, fur busby with scarlet bag. The film is one of the few to show a late Victorian hussar in action rather than at parade. Simon Ward in uniform remains a reference image for anyone commissioning a late 19th century hussar impression.
Theatre
On stage the hussar jacket has featured in productions of The Merry Widow (where Danilo wears Pontevedrian hussar dress), countless Lehar operettas, War and Peace (Prokofiev's opera), and more recently in Dear England and Hamilton inspired productions that borrow the silhouette for stylised modern wear. Theatrical pelisses are usually simpler than film versions, with faux fur instead of real, because they live under hot lights and need to work night after night.
Common questions
Which film has the most accurate hussar uniforms?
Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace (1967). The budget and access to Soviet museum collections gave the costume team resources no Western production has matched since.
Did Sharpe use real wool uniforms?
Yes, for the core cast. Extras wore a mix of wool and heavy cotton. The braid was hand set on the principals' jackets. The real wool is one reason the costumes still read as right in high definition reruns.
Was Napoleon (2023) historically accurate?
Costume was praised for accuracy. The strategy and politics in the film were widely criticised. The hussar jackets are a touch long in the hem for strict accuracy, but close enough to pass.
Who makes film hussar uniforms?
Specialist military tailors supply to film productions. Angels Costumes in London hold the largest rental library. Bespoke productions commission from firms that work from period patterns.
Can I commission the same quality for a wedding?
Yes. Bespoke civilian hussar jackets are made to the same standards as film production costumes, using the same wool and the same hand set braid. Allow six to twelve weeks of lead time.
